An unusual example of a mid-19th century deadeye from a ship's rigging with a section of the cable, rope-wound and tarred, still attached. The deadeye is lignum vitae, 5" in diameter. The 3/4" diameter cable stub is 8 1/4" long, plus the section that is fastened around the wood. The un-touched surface is as grungy as they come, obviously from serving on a hard-worked old vessel.
